Dark Phoenix has been a movie, that so far, has been rife with reshoots, delays and supposed, leaked plot info; which is very reminiscent of X-Men 3: The Last Stand.
Fox’s X-Men reboot impressed audiences back in 2011 with X-Men: First Class and again with 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, gaining praise from fans and critics alike. It seemed that the studio had moved past the critically panned X3 and had won the public over again with the long, beloved Marvel franchise.
However, 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse was a critical and financial flop for the studio, which spelled trouble for the X-Men universe.
Despite having a great cast of actors and characters such as Nightcrawler, Storm, Cyclops and Jean Grey making their return to the franchise (albeit younger versions) the film was underwhelming and failed to impress both audiences and critics.
Two years later; Fox and Disney announced a merger which would see all of Fox’s Marvel IP’s such has Deadpool, Fantastic Four and yes, X-Men return to Disney/Marvel – meaning that these characters would finally be entering the highly successful MCU.
By this point, however, Dark Phoenix was well into production and at one point there were even rumours that the film would be completely scrapped in favour for the reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Fox pressed ahead with production…
This then begged the question: was there actually any point to this movie?
Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) only made her return to the X-Men universe in X-Men: Apocalypse and straight off the bat, the movie teased the return of the Dark Phoenix only a couple of hours after reintroducing the famous X-Men member.
Fans deemed this to soon a time for such a huge event to take place within the rebooted franchise and given that it previously took three X-Men movies to build up to that event, which concluded the original trilogy, it would have made much more sense to leave the X-Men franchise on the somewhat positive ending of X-Men: Apocalypse.
It would have been more impactful to introduce the Dark Phoenix character within the MCU. This way it builds up to a much more impactful event that would not only affect the X-Men but a larger, well established cinematic universe.
The first Dark Phoenix trailer dropped online back in September 2018 and yesterday, the second trailer landed and gave us a better look at the plot.
PLEASE NOTE: This trailer gives away a very HUGE spoiler!! So watch and read our summary (below) at your own risk!
Watched the trailer? Good.
Okay, so we now know that Jean Grey kills Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) in a setting similar to how Grey killed Charles Xavier (Previously played by Sir. Patrick Stewart) back in X3 i.e a home setting – likely to be her childhood neighbourhood.
It seems as though the X-Men are split once again – specifically Beast and Magneto; the latter of which, if you remember, redeemed himself in the previous movie. It looks as though some of the infamous mutants will try and kill Jean, whilst the others look to try and save her.
We also see the full group of X-Men and Magneto under guard on what looks like a prison train, wearing power inhibiting collars. If you recall, Deadpool 2 also featured the same collars. Could they be heading to the ‘Ice Box’ before Jean Grey intervenes?
X-Men in space?
Some of the leaked story (which appeared online) detailed a scene where the X-Men were asked to help save a stricken space shuttle crew in space. Here Jean is exposed to either the Phoenix Force itself or at least some kind of energy which awakens it. This seems to pan out in what we have seen from the trailer so far.
From what we know of this movie, the X-Men are now looked at as heroes (similar to The Avengers) so it will be interesting to see if mutants are more widely accepted in society, rather than being persecuted.
Regardless, it looks as though that fame won’t last long given the events that look to transpire.
It’s clear that Scott Summers aka Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) will play a crucial part in bringing back Jean from the powers of the Dark Phoenix; much like Wolverine (Huge Jackman) did in X3. We presume that a similar ending will transpire i.e. Scott will have to kill Jean or at the very least, Jean will come back this time but will have to go into hiding?
Either way, this looks to be a movie which is much darker in tone and while we sincerely hope that this movie sends off the near 20 year Fox franchise with the bang it deserves. We can’t help but wonder if the fanbase will embrace this movie with a Disney reboot just around the corner.
Lets hope this movie surprises us all and knocks it out of the park!
